The Christian Science Monitor chimes in with an opinion as to why US healthcare so expensive today, and their answer goes like this:
- Those on the economic left [in England and the US] simply don’t want to admit it. It is, in fact, the same problem we have with healthcare in our country: People don’t pay for their own care.
There can be something said for this opinion, however, it completely overlooks both the shared costs associated with public health epidemics and that little thing called the hippocratic oath, which keeps doctors delivering care for all – not just those able to afford care.
Also important: if you can’t afford car insurance you find other ways to get around. If you can’t afford health insurance, providers either find a way to care for you in catastrophic situations (which increases costs for everyone) or you die.
This directly contradicts CSM’s overly simplistic suggestion.
